4-H Exchange Application Process

International exchange programs give participants a global perspective, increased problem-solving skills and the ability to work with diverse cultures, preparing them for  a future in the global community and economy. Living in another culture develops creativity, flexibility, communication skills and confidence. International friendship enriches a person’s life and brings cultures together.

Alaska 4-H offers two summer exchange programs to Japan. You do not have to be a current 4-H member or to speak Japanese to participate. Travel is coordinated through the CSIET-certified States’ 4-H International Exchange Programs. Participants are escorted from the west coast departure city to and from Japan by chaperones who will remain in Japan during the exchange. Program orientation occurs in Alaska, in the U. S. departure city and in Tokyo.

The 4-Week Home-stay program runs from approximately July 9-August 7.  Applicants can be ages 13-18 during the exchange period. Our host is the Labo International Exchange Foundation, certified by the government of Japan. Labo is a youth organization in Japan whose goal is international friendship and global understanding. You will be hosted by a youth of the same gender and similar age who shares some of your interests. You will live in Japan, not as a tourist, but as a member of a Japanese family who will accompany you anywhere you need to go. You will share culture with your host family and cook them an American/Alaskan meal. Your host brother or sister will be a Labo club member and you will attend meetings and a three-day Labo Camp with him or her. Labo clubs and camps have children of all ages, and the emphasis is on creativity, self-expression and friendship while learning about other cultures.

The 8-Week Nihongo Program runs from approximately June 11-August 7. Applicants can be ages 16-18 during the exchange period, with younger participants accepted on a case-by-case basis. For the first 4 weeks of the program you will stay with a host family in the Tokyo area and attend Japanese language school. There will be many field trips and opportunities to learn about Japanese culture. You will share culture with your host family and cook them an American/Alaskan meal. This program requires some independence, as you will learn to travel to school by yourself on the trains. At the end of the 4 weeks, you will move to a new host family and live as a member of that family and attend Labo Camp just like the participants in the 4-week program.

Applications are accepted all year.
The deadline for traveling the following July is currently December 1. Please see the links below for information on the application process and payment schedule.
