What if I told you that there was a magic bullet—something that would improve the quality of your daily life, your children's chances of success in the world, [and] your family's health. . .? Something that is inexpensive, simple to produce, and within the reach of pretty much everyone? - See more.

September is family dinner month!

Join Alaska 4-H in celebrating a
month of family dinners!
During the month of September visit this page to find easy family meals along with inspiration for quality table time as a family. Families come in all different shapes and sizes, but each and every child will benefit from frequent sit-down dinners with a caring adult.

Remember when talking with your kids, use open ended questions, not ones that can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no". Instead of "Did you have a good day at school today?" try "What did you enjoy most about school today?".

Kid-friendly meals

Try to involve all family members when preparing dinner and setting the table.

Fun conversation topics:
  • If I lived on my own island surrounded by clear waters to swim, plenty of food to eat, and lots of exciting things to do, could I live without technology?
  • What would my island be called?
  • If I could only choose one type of animal to live on my island which would it be?
  • Would I need transportation on my island, what kind and why?
  • Would I make the shore my home or live inland?

Quick healthy meals

For the working parent(s) there is not always a lot of time to prepare healthy meals on school nights. Consider preparing  meals or portions of a meal on less busy days and freezing for later.
The following recipes have been shared from here.

  • Name five places you want to go in the next 10 years.
  • What five things do you want to do there?
  • What are some ways you can raise money to travel?

Slow Cooker meals

Slow Cookers really come in handy during the cold months. There are several "dump in" in the morning, turn on low and go!, recipes that will ensure a warm, delightful smelling meal ready for you when you get home. Add a bagged salad and voila! Slow cookers are a great investment and can be very inexpensive. The cost of a slow cooker can save a family money when they find themselves running out for last minute meals on weekday nights. The 6 quart cooker works great for families of 4 or more.

Fun table-talk topics:

  • If you could be anyone in history including people alive today, for one hour, who would you be?
  • You can go get anyone from the past and bring him or her to the present for one hour. Whom would you bring and what would you do with that person?
