November 2021 At-Home Kit

It's almost the holidays, a time for giving. Let's get into the holiday spirit together by baking together and donating some of our breads to the homeless shelter in Kodiak.

If you've signed up for the project, you will have received an email with details on pick up. Email klschaberg2@alaska.edu if you think you signed up but didn't get the details!

Instructions are included in your kit.  If you lose your instructions or want to play along with us on your own, a copy can be found here. 

Below, we offer some helpful tidbits for you while you work on your project.

2020 Breads Donation to Brother Francis Shelter

This month, we're baking and giving!! 

Getting Ready

First thing: get out all of your supplies, and read the recipe in its entirety.  Then get started! 

Supplies Provided: You'll need the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in the bag from your kit along with the recipe, and mini loaf pan.   
Supplies Needed from Home: 1 egg, 3/4 cup milk, 1/3 cup cooking oil, muffin tins, and an oven.
Optional: muffin papers, mixing bowl, optional add-ins to get creative with your breads! 

NOTES:

• Each bag of dry ingredients makes one recipe.  If you have 3 kids in your family, you got two bags of dry ingredients.  Make a double batch, or save a kit for later!
• You should have received one loaf pan per child. It's up to you if you'd like to use them all, or make  muffins with the remaining batter.  We're asking for one mini loaf bread per family donated to the Brother Francis Shelter.

Making Your Muffins and Bread

• Ask a parent to help and preheat oven to 400 degrees F
• Grease muffin cups and mini loaf pan with oil spray or cooking oil on a paper towel. If you would prefer, you can line muffin tins with papers.​

•  In a small mixing bowl, slightly beat egg with a fork, mix in milk and cooking oil. If you've never beat an egg before - check out the video here: ​​

• In a larger mixing bowl, empty contents of dry ingredient bag. Make a well in the center.
• Add egg mixture all at once to the well in the dry ingredients.​

• Stir JUST until moistened,. If adding optional add-ins, do so now. Total mixing time should be no more than 20-25 strokes. Batter should be lumpy.
• Spoon into mini loaf pan, about 2/3 full.
• Use the remaining batter to fill muffin tins, again about 2/3 full.
• Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

​TEST FOR DONENESS: If you insert a toothpick, it should come out clean!!! Not sure what that means? Check out the video below.

Quality Control is important!!! Test out your product by eating one of the muffins!!  Save the mini loaf for the service component of your project (see below!)

The Gift of Giving

Whenever we do service projects in 4-H, I'm reminded of a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?"  YOU are making and giving bread to those in need. Thank you.  

Once your bread has cooled, leave it in the pan and place it back in the bag you got your kit in!  

Then kindly ask your parent to deliver it to the Brother Francis Shelter on Monday November 20 when you come for your tour between 5-5:45PM.

OR

If you didn't sign up for a tour, ask them to take it back to the 4-H office and place in the tote where they picked your kit up!!
