We're so excited to learn a new skill with you this month AND complete a fun service project!

If you've signed up for the project, you will have received an email with details on pick up. Email klschaberg2@alaska.edu if you think you signed up but didn't get the details!

Instructions are included in your kit.  If you lose your instructions or want to play along with us on your own, a copy can be found here!

Practice Makes Perfect!

Your kit includes some printed instructions for how to do some easier origami folding, but sometimes, watching a video can make things a bit easier!   Check the videos out below for some easy and more challenging origami folding (note: this may not align exactly with the instructions on your paper).

BE SURE TO SAVE ONE SHEET FOR YOUR PEACE EXCHANGE!

Origami Videos!

Note the importance of hard creases and making sure things line up!

Ready for the Origami Exchange Project?

We are working with Armed with the Arts, Inc and will be trading your peace origami with another child somewhere in the world.

We will be
collecting your peace doves and cranes at the 4-H office up until March 31!  Want to join us? Here's what you need to do:
  • Get a square piece of paper!
  • Remember to draw pictures or write messages of peace on your origami paper before you start.
  • Follow one of the instructions below (heart, dove or crane are all options!) and fold your creation.
  • Drop your origami back off to the office before March 31
  • Be on the look out for when we receive cranes from a different country!

February At-Home Kit: Feeding & Finding Birds

2/17/2022

We're so glad you've decided to join in the fun! Over the next three months, you'll be exploring 4-H at home projects.  4-H is all about learning by doing and having fun helping others, so get ready to do just that.

If you've signed up for the project, you will have received an email with details on pick up. Email klschaberg2@alaska.edu if you think you signed up but didn't get the details!

Instructions are included in your kit.  If you lose your instructions or want to play along with us on your own, a copy can be found here.

Below, we offer some helpful tidbits and resources for you while you work on your project.

First, decide which bird feeder you'd like to make.

You have supplies needed for two complete bird feeders, and directions for a third kind of feeder, but for that one you'll need to provide your own up-cycled water bottle.  You likely only have enough bird seed to fill up two of your feeders just once...after that you'll have to get your own!  So take a look at the directions, watch the videos, and decide which two you'd like to complete.

Option 1 : Pine Cone Feeder - Easiest

This one is a slam-dunk, guaranteed to feed, easy to make type of bird feeder!!  Let's get started!

Option 2: Egg Carton Feeder

This one is a test!  It's pretty easy to make, but I'm not POSITIVE the birds will like it.  Let's test it out together!

Option 3: Water Bottle Feeder - Hardest

For a challenge, try this one out!!!  The directions you got only use one perch, but that should be the only way it's different.  Can't wait to see your bird feeders!

Now for the fun part: watching and identifying the birds that visit!

If you lost the copy that came with your kit, or you need another page, click on the photo below to download your copy of the bird feeder observation log.

A great resource for identifying birds at your feeder would be
Rich MacIntosh’s guide to feeder birds.

Notice the birds in the photo below aren't necessarily all bird feeder birds, just ones you might see out and about!

Need some hands-on help identifying what birds you're seeing? Katie Wallace, Kodiak birder and elementary school teacher put together a series of amazing videos to show off some of Kodiak's birds! Check out the links below by clicking on the buttons below Katie's photo...they're amazing and Katie's love of birds is contagious!!

This month we are going to create some holiday cards using watercolor pencils.  You may keep your cards or send your cards...we are asking for at least one card back for the residents at the Kodiak Senior Center.

Please remember, the message inside the card is often just as important , if not more, than the art on the front!! Put some thought into your message. Some ideas for messages could include-
  • May your day be filled with all kinds of bright sunny things
  • Sending cheerful thoughts to brighten your day
  • Sending lots of hugs your way
  • Wishing you peace, love and joy this holiday season
  • You are a bright and shining star!
  • Today is a good day for a GOOD DAY
  • Best wishes for a wonderful holiday
  • We wanted you to know we are thinking of you and hoping you have a wonderful day!

Instructions are included in your kit.  If you lose your instructions or want to play along with us on your own, a copy can be found here.

Below, we offer some helpful tidbits for you while you work on your project.

2020 Breads Donation to Brother Francis Shelter

This month, we're baking and giving!!

Getting Ready
First thing: get out all of your supplies, and read the recipe in its entirety.  Then get started!

Supplies Provided:
You'll need the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in the bag from your kit along with the recipe, and mini loaf pan.
Supplies Needed from Home: 1 egg, 3/4 cup milk, 1/3 cup cooking oil, muffin tins, and an oven.
Optional: muffin papers, mixing bowl, optional add-ins to get creative with your breads!

NOTES:
  • Each bag of dry ingredients makes one recipe.  If you have 3 kids in your family, you got two bags of dry ingredients.  Make a double batch, or save a kit for later!
  • You should have received one loaf pan per child. It's up to you if you'd like to use them all, or make  muffins with the remaining batter.  We're asking for one mini loaf bread per family donated to the Brother Francis Shelter.
Making Your Muffins and Bread
  • Ask a parent to help and preheat oven to 400 degrees F
  • Grease muffin cups and mini loaf pan with oil spray or cooking oil on a paper towel. If you would prefer, you can line muffin tins with papers.
  •  In a small mixing bowl, slightly beat egg with a fork, mix in milk and cooking oil. If you've never beat an egg before - check out the video here:
  • In a larger mixing bowl, empty contents of dry ingredient bag. Make a well in the center.
  • Add egg mixture all at once to the well in the dry ingredients.
Picture
  • Stir JUST until moistened,. If adding optional add-ins, do so now. Total mixing time should be no more than 20-25 strokes. Batter should be lumpy.
  • Spoon into mini loaf pan, about 2/3 full.
  • Use the remaining batter to fill muffin tins, again about 2/3 full.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
TEST FOR DONENESS: If you insert a toothpick, it should come out clean!!! Not sure what that means? Check out the video below.
Quality Control is important!!! Test out your product by eating one of the muffins!!  Save the mini loaf for the service component of your project (see below!)

The Gift of Giving

Picture
Whenever we do service projects in 4-H, I'm reminded of a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?"  YOU are making and giving bread to those in need. Thank you.

Once your bread has cooled, leave it in the pan and place it back in the bag you got your kit in!

Then kindly ask your parent to deliver it to the Brother Francis Shelter on Monday November 20 when you come for your tour between 5-5:45PM.

OR

If you didn't sign up for a tour, ask them to take it back to the 4-H office and place in the tote where they picked your kit up!!

The art of applying tissue paper and leaves is demonstrated below:
First apply mod podge, then tissue paper, then mod lodge again.

If adding leaves: apply mod lodge, then leaf and be sure to press along edges. If it won't sit flat, you can also add white tissue over top of the leaf (that part is not demonstrated)

We want to see how yours turned out!
