Kodiak 4-H Livestock Program

A newly charted Kodiak 4-H Livestock club will begin meeting on January 8, 2023 for the new 4-H year.  Youth can sign up in Zsuite, or contact the office (interim 4-H Agent Marla Lowder at 907-474-2427) for more information before signing up.

Who can join? Any youth in Kodiak, 8 years old and up can join.
When are club meetings? The Livestock club will hold meetings on the first and last Sunday of the month, beginning in January.  Additional meetings for those raising market animals will be determined by project leaders.
Does it cost anything? 4-H enrollment dues are $26 for the 4-H year, which goes from October 1- September 30.
What will my child learn?
  • Club members can expect to learn how to run a meeting, organize community service activities, do public speaking, keep a 4-H record book and have a great time in the process.
  • Additionally club meetings will offer learning in the world of large and small livestock. Students will learn how to efficiently feed animals, care for them, how to butcher, doctor and enjoy these wonderful creatures.
  • Orientation for JML projects will be held on January 19th, at 6PM. Look for your email with more details!
Do I have to have my own animals or space for animals?
  • Youth will need to acquire and raise their own animals if participating in Junior Market Livestock projects.  There is some space available at the fairgrounds for raising animals.  For the general animal project, youth do not have to have their own animal.

Information from the 2022 Project Year

Kodiak 4-H is proud to have an active youth development and educational 4-H livestock program for the first time in over 30 years, and we are looking forward to contributing to locally grown food for your family!

In the livestock project, 4-H'ers are learning about large livestock, raising pigs and learning to make decisions, keep records, manage money, take responsibility, manage time, and many other important life skills.

We have 7 youth raising pigs this year for market, and we look forward to the future growth of this program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Invest in 4-H Livestock?
The Kodiak Livestock Auction is the culmination of a year of hard work and dedication by these young 4-H members and entrepreneurs!  Each 4-H member is learning to be a young business person and local food producer.  They invest their love, time, money and energy into their livestock project. In many cases this is their first real transaction in the business world, selling a product for a profit.  It is up to  community members to invest in the youth of 4-H by purchasing their animals.

What can a buyer expect in terms of product?
  • The winning bidder is purchasing a live animal.
  • 4-H can help facilitate delivery to the slaughterman so that buyer can pick up their pig headed, gutted, split and halved. Under current USDA laws this is as far as it can be processed.
  • Buyer will be responsible to process it down past a half.  We have several gracious community members who have offered to help you process your meat if you need assistance.  You will be responsible for arranging a good time for this service.
  • Please note: The meat from your hog is intended for private consumption only. Buyers may not re-sell or serve meat for public consumption, per USDA laws.
Can more than one family buy a pig together at the auction?
Buyers are welcome to share with another family, but there should only be one bidder. In this scenario, buyers will be responsible for dividing their meat

How big are the pigs at auction?
Our Suggested Finish Weights: 180-290 lb
Yield of meat (Percent of Live Weight): 70%

How much will it cost?
Prices will be determined by highest bidder at auction.  Kodiak 4-H members put a lot of time, energy, money and love into their project, therefore will be a reserve bid amount. The family reserves the right not to sell under the reserve.

How can I support the 4-H member without buying a pig?
At the auction, community members who don't want a whole hog will have the opportunity to support our 4-H members with an extra donation for their 4-H livestock project through "add-ons".  These add-ons are considered a tax deductible donation to the program.

What do the pigs get fed?
The pigs are fed a variety of things including grower feed, milk, bread, fruit, cracked corn and sometimes even scrambled eggs for a treat!

How many pigs are there?
We will be auctioning off seven pigs, all raised by Kodiak 4-H youth.
