We're halfway through the work/school week, who couldn't use a pick me up?  Enter: Comfort food! Let's put your baking skills to the test!  This recipe and photos shared by 4-H volunteer, Sue Zimmerman.

Project Discipline: Baking
Ages: All ages, cloverbuds will need supervision
Difficulty level: medium
Supplies: water, honey, salt, yeast, oil, flour, parchment paper, cheese, pepperoni, canadian bacon (other fillers that would normally serve as pizza toppings, as desired)
To make the dough (this makes one Stromboli):
  • In a bowl, whisk together 1 cup warm water,  1 teaspoon of honey and a dash of salt.
  • Add one packet of yeast or 1 tablespoon of yeast Do Not Stir; let the yeast get puffy
Once puffy:
  • Add 1 tablespoon of oil  and 2-2 ¼ cups of flour
  • Blend with a fork
  • Coat the dough ball with a little bit of oil.
  • Cover and let sit till it rises half its size
Now's the time to get some homework done, while you wait....

When you're ready to assemble the stromboli, preheat your oven to 500 degrees.
  • Place parchment paper down with some flour on it. Roll the dough into a rectangular shape on top of parchment paper.
  • Next add cheese, pepperoni, Canadian bacon etc. You can make it vegetarian by sautéing onions, peppers and Greek olives etc. Use any ingredients you like for pizza!
  • Next roll it up! (this is why the parchment paper is so great!)
    • First fold one side in to center
    • Next fold the other side all the way over to close the Stromboli

Tuck the ends and edge in so no cheese or meat falls out. Move to the cookie sheet (leave the Stromboli on the parchment paper the whole time)
Whisk 1 egg, and use a brush to cover the entire Stromboli with egg wash. Cut 2 to 3 slits across the top for hot air to escape while cooking.

When you are ready to put your Stromboli in the oven, reduce heat to 375 degrees before you put it in. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the top is golden.
While it's in the oven, get some dipping sauces ready if you like to dip!  Recommended sauce: marinara!
