Oh man, my mouth is already watering - how about yours?  We have a well-loved soft pretzel recipe to share today, and you are going to LOVE it. Warning: this recipe makes just TWO pretzels!

Project Discipline: Baking
Ages: All ages, cloverbuds will need supervision

Difficulty level: medium
Supplies: yeast, sugar, flour, salt, butter, egg, cinnamon, baking soda, water, baking tray, parchment paper

So first you'll want to make the pretzel dough, following instructions 1-4 on page 1 of this well-loved recipe!

Then you'll need to find your patience and let the dough sit for one and a half hours, until it doubles.  While you're waiting, head outside!  Fresh air and fun makes the time fly!

Once your dough has doubled, preheat your oven to 450 degrees.

Next you'll need to get your water bath ready: boil 10 cups of water with 2/3 cup baking soda.  While you're waiting for the water to boil, you'll form two ropes of dough, each 24 inches long.

The recipe suggests you:
  • divide the dough into four pieces.
  • roll each piece into 12 inch ropes
  • connect two ropes to form one 24 inch rope
  • repeat with other two ropes
  • shape as you wish
Here are some ideas:

If you're going with the classic, here are the directions, written out:

Next, you'll want to line a baking sheet with parchment paper

Using a large spatula, and CAUTION, gently lower the first pretzel into the boiling water.  Let it cook for 30 seconds before removing to the baking sheet.  Repeat with the other pretzel.

Next, brush your pretzels with egg yolk (generously).

Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.  When they come out, add butter and cinnamon /sugar or salt, depending on your preference!

Enjoy! Oh, and don't forget to snap a photo to share before you eat your pretzel!
