Shooting Sports Project
The Alaska 4-H Shooting Sports project uses the positive youth development model to provide instruction in the safe handling of firearms, air guns and archery equipment. Using the eight essential elements of positive youth development identified in the Targeting Life-Skills Model, Alaska 4-H Shooting Sports project assists young people and their adult volunteers in attaining knowledge, develops self-confidence and leadership abilities, and instills an appreciation for conservation, wildlife, and service. The focus of the Alaska 4-H Shooting Sports project is the total development of the young person. The shooting sports and related natural resource activities are utilized as a vehicle for human growth and development. The program follows a standardized format, lists program components and identifies clearly intended learning outcomes. The eight shooting sports disciplines from which youth can choose are: archery, shotgun, rifle, pistol, black powder, biathlon, hunting, and western heritage.
