Teens from across Alaska are invited to Juneau for a week each year to immerse themselves in the legislative proceedings. A mock legislative session allows the teens to explore roles of lobbyists, committee chairs and constituents.

Daily Schedule

2019 Youth in Governance Schedule

Day 1 Sunday, February 17
PM - Run down of week and get acquainted games
Day 2 Monday, February 18
8-9 - Breakfast
10-12 – Legislative Information Office a. The legislature and how it works. b. The difference between senators and representatives. c. The different roles in a committee. d. Have individuals choose a role of a committee member they would like to play (i.e. lobbyist, chair, member) and move through a mock committee session. We will use a mock bill presented by one of the districts before hand.
12-1 - lunch
1-4:00 –Hold our own mock committee hearings based on your bills/ Visit Committee Hearings
4:00-5:00 - Prepare and practice for our visits to Capital Hill
5:00 - 6:00 – Homework
6:00 - 7:15 – Dinner
7:30 - Fun
Day 3 Tuesday, February 19
8-9 - Breakfast
9-11:00 – Districts meet with personal Senator and Representatives
11:00-12 Capital Hill - meet with Senators and Representatives; watch sessions and complete Capital Hill fact sheet.
12-1:30 – Lunch
1:30 – 5:00 Capital Hill - meet with Senators and Representatives, watch sessions and complete Capital Hill fact sheet, those who have page assignments will need to do them.
5:00 - 6:00 - Homework
6:00 - 7:15 – Dinner
7:30 - Fun
Day 4 Wednesday, February 20
8-9 Breakfast
9-5 Pages for the day.
5:00 - 6:00 – Homework
6:00 – 7:30 – Etiquette Dinner
7:30 - Fun
Day 5 Thursday, February 21
7-8 – Breakfast for legislators hosted in capital
8-9 – Program in Committee meeting
9-12 Capital Hill - meet with Senators and Representatives; watch sessions and complete Capital Hill fact sheet.
12-1:30 – Lunch
1:30 – 5:00 Capital Hill - meet with Senators and Representatives, watch sessions and complete Capital Hill fact sheet.
5:00 - 6:00 – Homework
6:30 - 7:30 – Dinner and Evaluation of program and recap
7:30 – In hotel movie night and write Thank You cards to Legislatures and supporters.
9:00 get packed
Day 6 Friday, February 22
7:30 – 8:30 – Breakfast Check out and go home
