17) Rm 1, 11-12:30pm Reporting and Preventing Disease on the Farm - Robert Gerlach, DVM Alaska State Veterinarian
Recognizing a disease outbreak may not always be obvious. Some infections can be very subtle so you need to have a monitoring system and a plan for responding. We have to remember that some of the diseases that can affect animals can also infect people. These zoonotic diseases are a triple threat: to your animals, to you and your family and to the people that may consume the animal products (eggs, milk, and meat). When acute illness occurs the animal may be depressed and show signs (depression, abnormal gait, stool or appetite....etc.). Some infections may not cause outward signs of illness. Keeping records of the animal's production (milk volume, number of eggs, or weight gain) can help identify a problem if there is a decrease in production. You need to have a plan to figure out what is causing the problem, how to keep it from spreading and how to treat it. A Herd Health plan and Biosecurity plan for your farm are two of the best and least expensive ways to prevent disease from affecting your animals.

The object of this workshop is to provide an increased awareness about the misuse of smart phones and other mobile devices. Sexting and cyber-bullying instances are gathering more and more attention due to the negative consequences that might impact both the sender and the receiver of the message. Learn techniques of how to help decrease and prevent sexting and cyber-bullying and what to do when you are made aware it happening.

Lastly, hear some crazy questions that may be asked and pull out the buzzers for a “game” of horse bowl. Additional non-trivia questions will be added so that all participants can get a feel of what it is like to be in a contest. Finally, we will review how to study for each part. Prior horse knowledge is not required.
